Course description

The Thoroughbred industry is an international billion-dollar concern. As such it requires highly qualified professionals with a broad range of skills. More than ever there is a demand for an understanding of sophisticated management techniques and scientific principles in the breeding and training of racehorses. This unique four year full-time course has been developed in collaboration with Oxford Brookes University to satisfy the ever-changing needs of the Thoroughbred industry. A combination of excellent facilities and expertise at Oxford Brookes University, the Thoroughbred stud enterprise and extensive industry connections of Abingdon and Witney College provide students with an exceptional opportunity. Students are taught at Oxford Brookes University and the Witney and Common Leys Farm campuses of Abingdon and Witney College. The third year of study is spent as a placement experiencing, hands-on, the Thoroughbred industry. Some of the modules studied are listed below:

• Practical Horse Husbandry - to include yard routines on a rota basis

• Training and Developing the Athletic Horse

• Animal Form and Function or Evolution
Year 3
Industry Placement, students who can provide evidence of sufficient industry experience will be exempt and gain direct entry to year 4.

• Injury and Rehabilitation
• Equine Genetics
• Endocrine and Reproduction Physiology
• Equine Ethics and Welfare
• Grassland Management
• Independent Placement Study (to be different from Double Project subject)

Entry requirements

GCSE Maths , English and Integrated Science (Double) and a science A level, preferably Biology.
Typical offers are A Levels grades at a BBC profile or the equivalent UCAS points . Experience is desirable but not a pre-requisite for entry. Mature students with relevant experience are welcomed. National Diploma, Higher National Diploma and Foundation Degree routes into the course are also available.
Applicants without a science A level are advised to consider one of our foundation degrees.
