AS/A Levels

What you need to know about studying AS and A Levels

Advanced Level qualifications can act as a springboard to many opportunities, from higher education to a better job.

Many students join us from school and choose to study with us as a 'sixth-form', but we also welcome mature and part-time students.

Full-time study

6thform corridorStudents choose from a large number of AS and A Levels and have the opportunity to study most combinations of subjects. Four AS subjects are generally studied in the first year with three being carried through to the full A Level or A2. It is possible to combine A Levels around a specific vocational focus such as:

  • Business Studies, Accounts, Economics and Law
  • Media Studies, English Language and English Literature and Film Studies

Other popular combinations are:

  • Psychology, Human Biology and Sociology
  • Government and Politics, Philosophy and Economics
  • French, German and English
  • Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Entry requirements

To study AS Levels you will normally need:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE at C grade or higher
  • Students who do not have English and/or Mathematics at GCSE grade C or above will be required to re-sit the English/ Mathematics GCSE examination at the earliest possible opportunity.

How long is the full-time course?

Every GCE A Level course consists of an AS and an A2 examination, each of which comprises three units.

Students will take the AS examinations in January and June and similarly for the A2 examinations. Both AS and A2 qualifications count towards the requirements for university entrance.

Course content

In addition to the normal programme – which may be 4 AS Levels or a National Diploma programme combined with one or more AS subjects – full-time students follow a tutorial programme and information technology sessions (CLAIT qualifications) together with a exciting enrichment programme.

Tutorial programme

Every full-time A Level student belongs to a tutor group which meets weekly. Students also receive support from one-to-one meetings with their tutors when they discuss progress and ways to improve their achievements and grades.

Results

We are delighted with the performance of our students. The results achieved have been above the national average. This year, our A Level pass rate was an impressive 98%.
