Degree courses closer than you think

You don’t have to relocate to study Higher Education. Over 70% of Foundation Degree students travel less than 24 miles to their college.

Employability

A Foundation Degree improves your chances of progression within the workplace, or securing yourself a job if you aren't currently working. Having the skills that employers need is vital. So, demonstrating that you are literate, numerate and have good communication skills will help towards this qualification. So too will showing that you have good interpersonal skills, that you can think for yourself, that you are reliable and responsible and have a good work ethic. A Foundation Degree will help you to acquire all of these skills. Evidence suggests that those with higher education qualifications are more likely to remain in work than their counter-parts who don’t.

Earning potential

Studies show that over a working life, those with higher education qualifications will, on average, earn £100,000 more than those who ceased their education at A Level.

Student Loan – it’s not as scary as it sounds

With a student loan, you won’t pay any money up front. If you meet the criteria, the course fees are paid for you via a student loan and you don’t start to repay any money until you have finished your course and you are earning at least £21,000 pa. You pay a percentage of the difference between what you earn and £21,000. So, when you earn more you will be able to afford to pay more. The monthly repayments will, for many people, compare to the cost of the average mobile phone bill.

Will I get in?

Why would you think you wouldn’t? Is it because you don’t have any A levels? Is it because no one in your family has any higher education qualifications? Do you think you are too old? Foundation Degrees are NOT just for students with A levels – 40% have BTEC or other vocational qualifications. And, whilst the numbers of 21 year olds applying to higher education is declining, the number of 21+ year olds is rising. Foundation Degrees are particularly suited to people who come from backgrounds where higher education isn’t part of their tradition.

Confidence

Almost everyone who starts a Foundation Degree will say that their personal self confidence grows with the course – ask anyone you know who has completed one. And furthermore, students who ‘top-up’ their Foundation Degree at Oxford Brookes are 70% more likely to achieve a 2:1 or better degree. And most of them began their journey thinking the same thing – that they couldn’t do it!!

Fees for 2011/12 are £2000 full-time per year and £900 part-time per year.

Fees for 2012/13 are £6000 full-time per year and £4000 part-time per year.
